Representation for Victims of Urogynecologic Mesh Complications

The more we age and experience life, the more medical problems we tend to have. Women may sometimes be disproportionately affected by this phenomenon. Many women experience incontinence, especially during physical activities, after childbirth, and during menopause. About 20% of women are affected enough for it to cause problems in their daily lives. Luckily, medical science is be able to address this problem and improve the lives of those suffering with this condition.

Unfortunately, some urogynecologic meshes have caused more harm than help to a number of women who received implants.

As of March 2018, there are thousands of pending lawsuits against several companies that make transvaginal meshes. One of those companies, Boston Scientific, was the subject of a recent 60 Minutes report claiming it used material in its products that directly causes several complications.

Allegations Against Boston Scientific

There are reports that Boston Scientific knowingly purchased inauthentic material from China and used it to make its urogynecological meshes. Boston Scientific denies claims that its product is dangerous, but experts suggest the opposite: that the material used in their mesh, polypropylene, is not safe for use in these implants and has resulted in many medical complications.

Dr. Michael Margolis, interviewed in the 60 Minutes report, stated that many of the meshes he removed had significantly shrunk in size and caused chronic inflammation. The most troubling aspect of the claims against Boston Scientific is that the company knowingly used a material that may have been inappropriate for human use.

The case against Boston Scientific appears to be a legitimate one, and further complicates the use of these devices as a whole. This case comes at a time when the efficacy of urogynecologic meshes is being questioned, and evidence of harm to thousands of women has been found. It is up to the individual and doctor to determine whether getting a mesh implant is appropriate. However, if you have a transvaginal mesh and are experiencing symptoms, it is important to consult your doctor, as the implant may need to be removed. If your device was made by Boston Scientific, the company may be liable for covering the medical costs and compensating you for pain and suffering. Consult an Omaha product liability lawyer to give yourself the best chance of receiving proper compensation.

Symptoms of Pelvic Mesh Complications

One authoritative study of 12,000 participants indicated that about 10% of women will experience mesh erosion within a year of implant surgery. Here are common problems that the FDA states are associated with urogynecologic mesh:

  • Pain or cramping in the area of the implant, including pain during intercourse
  • Infections in the area of the implant
  • Urinary tract infections or other problems
  • Bleeding in the area of the implant
  • Erosion or protrusion into the soft tissues, including nearby organs

What Can You Sue For?

Have you received a pelvic mesh and subsequently experienced symptoms? If so, you may have a case against the manufacturer to receive the compensation you deserve. Here are some of the reasons you can sue:

  • Mesh erosion: Caused when the manufacturer uses cheap material.
  • Infection: In some cases, these products infect the surrounding tissue or organs.
  • Product failure: If the product you were given has failed to fix the original condition (incontinence or prolapse).
  • Urinary problems: Blockage, or pain that complicates urination.

There are many benefits that come from advancements in medical technology, and in most cases these products enable us to have a better quality of life. However, there are some instances in which companies try to save a buck by using cheap or faulty materials, thereby causing greater harm than good. It is necessary to hold these companies accountable in the hopes that it doesn’t happen again.
