Legal Help for Victims of IVC Filter Injuries

An inferior vena cava filter (IVC filter) is a small metal device designed to prevent blood clots from reaching a patient’s lungs. They are usually implanted in patients who are at high risk for blood clots, such as people who have been immobilized due to a spine injury, a fall, or cancer. An IVC filter catches clots while allowing blood to still flow through, in theory. However, since their inception, IVC filters have been cited in many lawsuits as causing injury to patients. A malfunction in an IVC filter can easily result in serious injuries or death.

If you or someone you know has been harmed by an IVC filter, please call an experienced Omaha mass tort lawyer to discuss your case. We want to help you receive fair compensation for your pain, suffering, medical bills, and lost wages. Contact Bottlinger Law, L.L.C. at (402) 505-8234 for a free evaluation.

What Is an IVC Filter?

An IVC filter is put into the inferior vena cava, the vein that’s in charge of carrying blood from the lower body back to the heart. The metal wires of the IVC are implanted to ensure that a clot does not block the flow of blood into the heart and lungs. These filters are meant to be placed in patients who have previous history or risk of developing blood clots in their legs or pelvis. The patients might be immobile, suffering from deep vein thrombosis, recovering from a surgery, or recovering from a trauma.

However, IVC filters on the market have been plagued with issues:

  • Parts of the device breaking off and moving to other locations, such as the heart or lungs or places that are impossible to surgically reach
  • The vein being pierced by the filter, which can lead to cardiac death
  • The device migrating to a different location
  • The filter breaking down
  • The filter not doing its job and letting blood clots through

If you’ve suffered any of these issues, or if you’ve had to undergo surgery to try to fix the filter, you have grounds for filing a lawsuit. Many patients also suffer from mental distress knowing that they have a ticking time bomb permanently placed in their bodies. Any serious medical issue caused by this device should be addressed with an experienced law firm as soon as possible.
