Did Invokana Cause Your Amputation? Call Us

Invokana is frequently prescribed to treat patients with type 2 diabetes. But while this drug helps to ease that specific condition, it triggers other dangerous side effects in some people. The use of Invokana has been linked to amputation, kidney failure, severe urinary tract infection, and heart attack. In 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a black box warning (the highest warning possible) regarding the risks associated with taking Invokana.

Many patients suffered greatly because they weren’t warned of these dangerous side effects, and as a result, they have decided to take legal action against Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson. Lawsuits allege that the companies failed to disclose the risks of their drug to doctors and patients.

If you were harmed after taking Invokana, you might be eligible for financial compensation. If you were told by a doctor that you needed an amputation as a result of taking Invokana, and you stopped taking Invokana permanently after that, but you had an amputation between January 1, 2012, and July 25, 2017, we are interested in discussing your case with you.

Time is of the essence, so please give Bottlinger Law L.L.C. a call at (402) 505-8234 for a free consultation with an Omaha product liability attorney.

Invokana Risks

Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult onset diabetes, is the more common form of diabetes, causing the body’s sugar levels to rise to dangerous levels. Patients have trouble creating and processing insulin to deal with the sugar. Type 2 diabetes can cause health problems like high blood pressure, stroke, and nerve damage.

Invokana works to lower blood glucose levels in diabetic patients. It accomplishes this by getting greater amounts of sugar to be released through the patient’s urine. The medication achieves its goal, but can cause dangerous side effects. Diabetic patients may already have vascular problems that in some cases lead to amputation, but studies have shown that Invokana can double the risk of amputation. The research isn’t yet clear on why the drug affects the system in this particular way.

Here are some of the side effects that Invokana has been associated with:

  • Amputation
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Kidney failure
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis

Currently, physicians have to be mindful when prescribing Invokana to ensure patients do not possess factors that make them more predisposed to amputation. These factors include previous amputation, neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, and foot ulcers. Doctors must monitor patients taking Invokana for signs of possible complications, and must stop the medication if any complications occur.

If you’re taking Invokana and you experience unusual symptoms, it’s imperative that you seek medical treatment immediately.

For some patients, Invokana has devastating consequences. Many patients have been permanently disabled due to the drug. Due to its side effects, numerous Invokana users have chosen to pursue legal action against the makers of the drug, claiming that they were well aware of its risks and failed to warn doctors and patients. Pharmaceutical manufacturers are responsible for warning the public about the potential side effects of their medications.

If you had to have an amputation between January 1, 2012 and July 28, 2017, and your doctor let you know it was due to Invokana, please give Bottlinger Law L.L.C. a call to discuss your case. You might be eligible for financial compensation for lost wages, medical treatment, as well as pain and suffering. Call (402) 505-8234.
