Has Xarelto Caused You Harm?
Blood flow is essential for all organs in the human body. When blood flow is blocked or slowed, a person’s organs are, essentially, being starved.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans are severely injured or killed because of blood flow issues. Two common disturbances of blood flow are deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot in the legs; and pulmonary embolism (PE), a blood clot in the lungs. Another disturbance is atrial fibrillation (AF), which occurs when disorganized electrical signals cause the heart’s upper chambers to beat out of sync with its lower chambers, thus disrupting blood flow. It’s estimated that 60,000 to 100,000 people die from DVT and PE in the U.S. every year. Atrial fibrillation can also lead to stroke and sudden cardiac death.
One common treatment for DVT, PE, and AF is anticoagulants – blood-thinning medications. Older anticoagulants, like warfarin, were difficult to use because they required frequent blood tests and diet modification. This is why newer blood thinners like Xarelto are so widely prescribed by physicians. Xarelto, a brand name for the drug rivaroxaban, was jointly developed by pharmaceutical giants Bayer and Johnson & Johnson, which also manufactures it. Since Xarelto was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2007, it has become the most-prescribed anticoagulant in America.
But the safety of the drug has been called into question. Serious side effects have been linked to nearly 400 deaths and prompted over 20,000 federal lawsuits.
Side Effects of Xarelto
Dangerous side effects of Xarelto have been widely reported, and include the following:
• Uncontrollable and irreversible bleeding
• Severe gastrointestinal bleeding
• Hemorrhagic stroke (brain aneurism or bleeding in the brain)
• Epidural and spinal blood clots
• Abnormal liver function
• Severe anemia requiring transfusion
• Reduced platelet levels
• Low blood pressure
Since the 1950s, warfarin had been the preferred anticoagulant in the United States. Like Xarelto, warfarin carried a risk for uncontrollable bleeding. But unlike Xarelto, an episode of excessive bleeding induced by warfarin could be controlled with doses of vitamin K and other substances. There is currently no FDA-approved antidote for excessive bleeding induced by Xarelto, making a bleeding episode caused by the drug potentially fatal.
Is It All About the Money?
With so many severe side effects associated with Xarelto, why would Bayer and Johnson & Johnson promote their anticoagulant as a better, safer choice than the time-tested warfarin? Well, let’s look at the numbers. Warfarin is generic, and costs patients about $300 to $400 per month. Xarelto, on the other hand, costs patients about $3,000 a month. Bayer and Johnson & Johnson can make a lot more money by promoting Xarelto to doctors and the public.
The Keys to a Successful Xarelto Lawsuit
If you’ve suffered severe side effects while taking Xarelto, or lost a loved one who was taking Xarelto, you need to contact an experienced mass tort attorney. Pharmaceutical companies have deep pockets and employ armies of lawyers whose job is to mitigate their responsibility for any injuries their products cause. The seasoned legal team at Bottlinger Law L.L.C. in Omaha will stand up to Bayer and Johnson & Johnson, and argue that:
• Xarelto is a defective and unreasonably dangerous product.
• Bayer and J&J were negligent in developing and producing the drug.
• Bayer and J&J did not test Xarelto properly, and did not adequately warn of the potential for excessive bleeding.
• Bayer and J&J hid evidence of dangerous side effects of Xarelto from the FDA, the public, and the medical community; and that the marketing material misrepresented the drug’s safety.
• Bayer and J&J falsely promoted the idea that Xarelto patients did not need regular blood monitoring.
